In the sixteenth century, Akbar the Great built a city of sandstone near Agra (site of the Taj Mahal). Fatehpur Sikri is also known as the abandoned city because inhabitants left the city, nearly intact, after only a few years there. Some say the water supply was inadequate, but our guide tells us that Akbar realized his city was not defensible and he was afraid of invasion. In this photo, you can see the schoolhouse he built for his children in the city that was the seat of his empire for a brief time. If school facilities are of interest to you, take a look at this photo.
What a beautiful structure! It makes me feel melancholy for the one thing our online distance learning can't provide -- a beautiful, come-be-a-part-of-me campus. I'm so enjoying your pictures. Think I'll go hang out (virtually) in your sixteenth century school. How sad that the people there had so little time to enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteSchoolhouses do evoke a sense of community and a sense of gravitas! Best, Tom
